National Midweek Output (as Resident Film Critic)

The title “Resident Film Critic” was never really formally declared, much less granted, at National Midweek (ISSN 0116-2470), although some of the editors started calling me that (in print at one point) and it appealed to my preference for irony: not just because I started out as a freelance contributor – under a pen name, at that – and remained so until the publication folded up, but also because at certain points other colleagues were also writing reviews and criticism, and I was always glad to be relieved of the burden of having to cover everything, even if I didn’t and/or couldn’t write about them. It goes without saying that the compensation never sufficed (and neither did my day job – teaching at the state, now-national, university). I’d watch as many releases as time and budget could allow, during the last historical period when Filipinos were still active film-goers; after determining what films to review, I’d make an effort to watch them again and do the note-scribbling that made me an object of curiosity in graduate school a few years later, since I’d write in the dark without taking my eyes off the screen. Occasionally I’d sketch out thematic relationships, then – sometimes after several false starts – I’d type out my manuscript on a portable Olympia (later replaced with a Commodore 64) and hand-carry it to the magazine’s Roces Avenue office, maybe picking up whatever Php 150 (roughly US$ 3) checks were already available for any of my previous articles.

11011The stint ended unexpectedly and without any warning, resulting in a number of pieces that first came out only in book form, allegedly because the then-editor, Luis V. Teodoro, believed I broke some professional code by reviewing a film I had appeared in, titled Andrea, Paano Ba ang Maging Isang Ina? The review in question – where I foregrounded my participation as a means of achieving an on-the-set evaluation of the movie’s lead performance – came out (along with a few others that followed) in Fields of Vision, and I maintain, if it ever needed pointing out, that I had succeeded in what the critical project had set out to do. Professor Teodoro volunteered to write the foreword to my first post-Midweek book, Wages of Cinema, which I had conceptualized as a no-foreword-necessary volume; he was dean of the college where I taught and was known as a temperamental character, so I counted the matter as not worth troubling over.
